THE MAKUZU TEA CEREMONY JOURNEY

Makuzu Tea Gatherings & Tea Ceremonies

At Makuzu, our tea gatherings and ceremonies transcend ordinary experiences. Each moment is meticulously curated to cultivate a serene state of mind, delight the senses, and allow guests to savor a single bowl of tea with profound depth, in accordance with the full tradition of chanoyu.

Within our atelier, the tea rooms Ryugin and Shokoken, designed and built by the 4th-generation master Kōsai in 1964, are preserved as living spaces of heritage. These rooms have regularly hosted exclusive tea gatherings and ceremonies. For full tea ceremonies, we serve chakaiseki—a refined multi-course tea meal—in collaboration with Kyoto’s most esteemed restaurants. Tea gatherings feature seasonal tea bowls, utensils, and confections, all selected to reflect the elegance of the moment.

The architectural spaces, crafted by Shigezo Hirai VI, a master sukiya-style carpenter from Kyoto, are suffused with natural light, gentle breezes, the subtle sound of boiling water, and a collection of exquisitely crafted tea utensils—inviting guests to fully immerse in the passage of time within a tea room of exceptional refinement.

Even guests new to the Way of Tea are welcome to participate. While guidance will be provided to ensure the careful handling of our priceless utensils, the experience remains relaxed, yet utterly distinguished.

We invite you to enjoy a truly privileged encounter with the refined essence of Japanese culture through a complete and bespoke chanoyu experience.

Tea Room Shokoken
Tea Room ShokokenAn eight-mat main room built by Shigezo Hirai VI, master sukiya-style carpenter. Modeled after the Shōfūrō, favored by the 12th-generation Omotesenke head Seisai, it features a one-tatami tokonoma with a biwa stand. Named Shokoken by the 13th-generation Omotesenke head Sokuchusai, it embodies the philosophy of the 4th-generation master Kōsai: “If one works with tea ceramics, one must also immerse in the Way of Tea.”
Tea Room Ryugin
Tea Room RyuginA four-and-a-half-mat daime-style tea room with a designated preparation area. Following Sokuchusai’s advice that even small rooms should be generously proportioned, the room features a main pillar supporting a hanging shelf (tsuridana), creating a functional and intimate tea space. Named Ryugin (“Dragon’s Roar”) to honor the Year of the Dragon, 1964.

*Please note that this tea room is not available for use from June through September, as it is not equipped with air conditioning.
