Polychrome Openwork Water Container with Camellia Design

Polychrome Openwork Water Container with Camellia Design

This water container is composed in a double-layered structure, in which the inner and outer bodies are seamlessly integrated. The openwork camellia motifs on the exterior are achieved through repeated firings, creating a lustrous and richly nuanced surface.
This represents an exceptionally sophisticated technique, one that may be considered unique to the Makuzu kiln on a global scale. A historical example by the second-generation Kosai Miyagawa of Yokohama Makuzu served as a point of reference, which I had the rare opportunity to study through a private art dealer.
It was through a deep aspiration to inherit and carry forward the technical legacy of Yokohama Makuzu that this work was brought into being.
