Tea Bowl with Underglaze Orange Motifs beneath a Straw-Ash Glaze

This tea bowl was created on the occasion of succession, as the motif of tachibana, sharing the same pronunciation as “generation upon generation,” symbolizes continuity. The underglaze decoration reflects a technique historically associated with the Yokohama Makuzu kiln, while the straw-ash glaze represents a long-standing Makuzu tradition. In this work, the seventh-generation Kosai brings these two elements together into a newly realized expression. Through the layering of underglaze painting and straw-ash glaze, the work seeks to embody a renewed Makuzu aesthetic, uniting the legacy of the Kozan lineage with that of the Kosai family.
