This water container is adorned with seven colors: blue, red, yellow, green, yellow-green, black, and gold. While the vivid palette first captures the eye, closer observation reveals auspicious motifs rendered in gold, including pine, bamboo, plum, chrysanthemum, cranes, and turtles.
The glaze employed is known as the “Unohan glaze,” historically associated with Ninsei. It has been newly formulated and reintroduced by the seventh-generation Kosai, and is used here to evoke the aesthetic world of Ninsei’s polychrome ceramics in a contemporary context.
